Wood Finishes

Baker Road Furniture offers a variety of Rich Wood Tone Stains and Solid Colors. Up to six hand finishing steps give your Baker Road Furniture its' soft glowing finish. Each piece is protected with up to three coats of high quality lacquer to preserve and enhance its' beauty.

Since wood is a product of nature, the color of oak ranges from light tan to reddish brown. Any variation is due to natural characteristics found in our lighter wood-tone finishes. Grain variations and mineral streaks contribute to the inherent beauty of each cabinet.

Since no two trees are alike, true hardwood can be expected to have a variety of colors and grain textures. The finished look of fine cabinetry owes much of its' charm to these variations in color tone and grain characteristics. Because these variations are truly the natural beauty of hardwood, unusual or wild grain patterns are not considered as imperfections and will not constitute replacement, nor will Baker Road assume responsibility for variations in color tone and graining between these samples and a completed cabinet. No special emphasis will be made to select doors and drawers to match one another.

Materials

Lumber

All structural case components are fabricated from 3/4" thick, Performance Core Engineered Plywood. All doors, drawer fronts and trim are cut from solid, kiln-dried northern red oak, cherry and hard maple. All drawer boxes are constructed of 12mm thick, 9-ply solid birch plywood, free from all voids.

The performance core plywood allows us to manufacture a product with a smoother finish, flatter panels, even stronger construction, completely void and formaldehyde free.

• Stronger than traditional plywood, MOE of 862 vs. 660 for plywood, reducing or eliminating warped shelves and bridges.
• Virtually the same weight as traditional veneer core plywood.
• Zero formaldehyde, meets 2009 CARB requirements.
• Zero core defects such as voids, waves, and sand throughs.
• Superior screw holding in both face and edge.

Construction Highlights

Case

All structural case joints are assembled with 8mm X 30 mm birch multi-grooved dowel pins and glued with a high strength PVA glue, which creates the strongest, most accurate type of construction. Solid decorative trim is applied with various methods depending on the design.

Drawers

All drawer boxes are constructed using 12mm Baltic Birch, with a glued, bore and dowel corner joint which is actually stronger and more accurate than a dovetail joint. Drawer bottoms are 6mm Baltic Birch plywood and fully captured on all four sides, preventing the drawer bottom from pushing out due to heavy loads. All drawers run on 100lb rated ball bearing full extension slides. (effective 4/11). Knee space pencil drawer is equipped with a lock.

Finish

Here at Baker Road we take great pride in our finish quality. It all starts with a thorough hand sanding and pre-inspection before applying any one of our 14 hand wiped stain colors. Then it's off to the first topcoat station, where a high solids pre-cat lacquer/sealer is carefully applied, after drying, more hand sanding and inspection. The final, high solids pre-cat topcoat is then applied bringing out the full depth, clarity and durability of our finish. We feel we have one of the best production furniture finishes in the industry.
